The Steel Construction Manual.
Today went pretty well for me considering how nervous I was to start my first real job. The day started out with the usual new employee orientation and the normal HR stuff. I met pretty much everyone on the 6th, 7th, and 4th floor, but just because I met them, doesn't mean I'll remember them all right away (there are a LOT of people working in the office). Everyone was very nice to me though.
It goes to show how much people don't expect someone like me, a 24 year old girl, to be an engineer, let alone that I have a master's degree, when almost everyone I meet in the engineering office ask what my new job is and when they find out just stare at me with such an amazed look on their face. And some of them even went so far as to tell me that I look like I am still in high school.
We were all supposed to get new badges and car tags so we can get into the building by the end of the day today; however, something went wrong and we have to wait until tomorrow. So it looks like I'll be parking in the visitor parking lot on the side of the building again tomorrow!

My firm is growing a lot apparently. Today, there were about six or seven new employees! Not all of them were engineers though. Out of the whole civil/structural group, (which is I think about 20 people maybe?), only me, and two other people are girls. One of them is a girl that I went to school with a few years ago named Claire. I'm so glad that I am able to work with her! I think it's going to make learning my new job easier since I already know her and I'm comfortable going to her for questions.

The whole day, I felt like I was back at school again doing homework assignments. Only now, I'm getting PAID! And the best part about it is that there is NO HOMEWORK. I guess it just still hasn't sunk in that I'm living in Houston now, and I won't be going home to live in Sherman for the summers ever again.
My life as a kid is officially over. (But in a good way)
Welcome to Houston and the working world! I was hoping you would end in Houston so I must say I am very glad you are here!!
